At My End

Go see The World’s End this summer.

Don’t go see This Is The End.

The World’s End is made by people who actually give a fuck.

This is The End is made by people who are fucking around.

There is a much more eloquent way to put these sentiments but do you really need it?

This Is The End’s is, what I assume is at its core, a mugging group of friends peering at a camera while going CELEBRITIES LOL AMIRITE? I might be wrong, but there is little evidence to convince me otherwise. The cast of celebrities portray fictional representations of themselves instead of acting as characters. It strike sme as slightly indulgent, that the movie’s draw/appeal is not the story or the characters but the ‘celebrities.’ It reeks of bullshit, like I’d have the same experience on a Hollywood Bus Tour.  It also sells this  fantasy about how the life of a celebrity is an exciting adventure, perpetuating this nonsense idea that ‘famous’ equals ‘better.’

Fuck that noise.

The World’s End is by Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright, who made Sean of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, both movies that both parodied their respective genres while lovingly deconstructing them. This third movie is the final part of the “Blood and Ice Cream” trilogy that includes Sean and Fuzz, so it’s safe to assume that even at its bare minimum, you’ll get a decent movie experience out of this. You’ll actually get a movie that people labored over and not something that kind of came out of a weekend where Seth Rogan got high.

If you’re one of the few poeple reading this and somehow, somehow you considered This Is The End a “good time,” I ask you to reconsider it. Or don’t. It’s not the end of the world*

*it is indicative that you have no fucking taste, so, hey - just letting you know. You’re welcome.

Save Bray Studios!

Bray Studios. From its origins as a country house purchased by Hammer Films to its eventual development into the production studio used to film countless movies and television series (and that’s not even counting the various musicians that have recorded there), it’s been a major part of cinema history. Some of these projects include episodes of Doctor Who, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the model shots in Alien and numerous Hammer horror films.

However, this famous site is now facing demolition to make way for luxury housing! According to this article:

“Some of the blame for its current state has been placed on its owner, identified by The Daily Mail as agent Neville Hendricks, whom the protesters behind the Save Bray Studios petition accuse of letting the site be “deliberately run into the ground, in order to keep business out and declare the property unviable and unprofitable in order to push through planning permission.” Those protesters say they have testimony from “eminent directors, producers, musicians and rock stars” whose applications to use Bray were rejected based on the false premise that it was already fully booked—all to keep Bray from being a functioning studio.”

You read that right: the current owner apparently let it fall into a state of disrepair on purpose and refuses to let anyone who wants to use the place do so, all so that he has an excuse to level the place. Thankfully, there is a growing movement to stop the senseless destruction and you can help! In addition to signing the above-mentioned petition, you can also like the “Save Bray Studios” page on Facebook. Even big names like Terry Gilliam and Richard O’Brien have joined the cause. Please tell everyone you know about this and get them to join in as well. With enough signatures and attention brought to the deceptive nature of the reason for its proposed demolition, Bray Studios could very well ride out this storm.

Mermaids Under Water: Save the Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Video is NSFW.

Click Here to DONATE TO SAVE THE CONEY ISLAND MERMAID PARADE

The Kickstarter project went live about little over an hour ago and it’s already up past $3,000 dollars, about 3% of the intended goal.

Watching the above video will inform you all about the Mermaid Parade, how it’s been going for thirty years and how Hurricane Sandy’s damage to Coney Island is still felt, six months later.

I went to the parade last year, the first real summer in NYC after moving down. I’m a big fan of Coney Island’s Surf Avenue, the idea of this carnival boardwalk that offers a little bit of glitz and grit. It seemed like the Mermaid Parade was something everyone in this area has to do once in their life, especially if they’re any sort of weirdo.

While the Unofficial Mayor of Coney Island, Dick Zigun, does lay it on a little heavy how the Mermaid Parade is some stab against conformity and homogeneous nature of life, the thing is that the Mermaid Parade IS a display of weirdness as well as partial nudity. It’s a little hippie-ish in nature but if you want to make things weird and spooky, you can. It’s a chance to show off how bizarre you can be while wearing as much or little as you legally want.

The truth is I would donate to this funding as a way to support the idea of Coney Island. The last decade or so has seen Coney Island suffer gentrification and many corporate interests moving in. A lot of Luna Park has been cleaned up and made more friendly for families at the sacrifice of some of the scuzzier elements of the area. But there is still that element of freak and creep in the corners and cracks of Coney Island. Dick Zigun, the Mermaid Parade, the Sideshow and the Coney Island History museum are vanguards for this idea that there are havens for the weird and bizarre. If you give money to save the Mermaid Parade, you’re showing support for this ideal. Or, you’re showing support for people walking around basically topless. Either way – show your support.

 edit: fixed for spelling.

Record Store Day Is Here!

Record store Day is here at last. Seeing as how we’ve already discussed why this day is so important and showed you where to find the list of all the freebies available this year, there’s not much to say. You can find a list of the North American stores celebrating here and the list of UK stores can be found here.

No participating stores in your area? Fear not! As was the case last year, we’re offering some free music downloads to help you get into the spirit of things:

WVRockscene, has a ton of great free downloads. I especially recommend anything by The Renfields. Intrigued? Then their Bastard Sons of Ed Wood album is a great place to get started.

To quote the description in their Bandcamp profile, “Spirit of The Indies is a collective of independent artists, by the musicians, for the musicians, and their fans.” Every year they put together free sampler albums featuring a wide selection of artists, as evidenced by their 2012 and 2013 samplers.

If you’re looking for over 22 minutes of listening pleasure, then the Volcano Kings’ free Mechanical Beast EP should be right up your alley.

Both Lo-Fi Kabuki Records and Spookhand offer a mix of free and “Name your price” downloads, all of which are highly recommended. That said, please be fair with the “Name your price” downloads, as Lo-Fi Kabuki has been very good to our podcast and Spookhand is headed by our own Dr. Gangrene.

If you enjoyed Strange Jason’s review of Tales From The Emancipated Head by the Pine Box Boys, then you’ll be happy to hear how the track “Theme From The Emancipated Head” from said album is available on the free 2013 Farmageddon Records Music Festival Compilation CD download (along with 20 other great songs).

In addition to the free downloads of “The Film Geek Love Song” and “The Vampire Song (a plea for Cushing and Lee),” more musical greatness from Miscellaneous Plumbing Fixtures can be found at the two Soundcloud pages associated with the After Movie Diner podcast.

Happy Record Store Day!

As always, Gravedigger’s Local 16 is not to be held responsible for anything that may occur (be it good or bad) as a result of downloading from any links given here. Attempt at your own discretion. Blah blah blah…

Record Store Day Is Coming!

That’s right, this year’s Record Store Day will be held on April 20, 2013. You can find a complete list of all the free goodies available at this year’s event here. Although there’s nothing on said list that immediately leaps out to me as something of interest for horror fans, we still recommend that you participate. Why miss on out some free goodies and special sales (on both music and movies)? Our fans will be pleased to hear that we’ll be continuing our tradition of offering some free spooky music downloads on the big day as well.

Lately, it seems to have become fashionable to poo-poo Record Store Day. While I can understand not liking how it’s become more focused on big name artists and some of the exclusive releases aren’t free, I find the claims that it was orchestrated from the start by major record labels since they don’t want to switch over to downloads to be particularly irksome. I could buy that if it had been all major bands featured from the start, but that just doesn’t work considering what I’ve seen since I first started following the event in 2008. Considering the usual ham handed manner in which big businesses go about trying to come off as a grassroots effort, I find it hard to believe that something as smooth as the way Record Store Day was handled was orchestrated that way. Since most of the big labels are connected to movie studios, then why didn’t they try doing “Video Store Day” as well? Although there is a movement to get such a day established on the same level as Record Store Day, it’s clearly the product of an independent video store in Canada.

Also annoying is when the people expressing the above opinions say that we should just let record stores die off, rationalizing that the employees will be able to find jobs elsewhere. Yeah, because worked out real well for people in Michigan once the auto industry there went kaput, didn’t it? People seem all too eager to forget that the closing of brick and mortar retail stores effect far more than the employees of said store. I’m not just talking about the various music and movie distributors taking a big hit, either. Physical media replicators, the people whose job it is to sell discs to stores and the people who physically transport merchandise across the country all suffer if your local music store closes. And considering that audio dramas are popular enough among truckers that companies rent ad space at rest stops to promote them, I’d imagine they would also lose money (and potentially have to let people go) as well. It’s a great big cycle of suck and we can’t afford to let it happen, especially in today’s economy. So when the 20th rolls around, be sure to get out there and support your local record store!

Vote For Us In The Rondo Awards!

The man who puts the 'Die' in

Today, Sunday April 7th, marks the final day of voting for the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards. In fact, voting ends at midnight tonight!

Both Gravedigger’s Local 16 and Six Foot Plus have grown over the past year. But although there have been changes, our goals still remain the same: to examine all things spooky. We would all appreciate it if you voted for Gravedigger’s Local 16 as “Best Blog” and Six Foot Plus as “Best Horror Multimedia.”

The “Linda Miller Fan Artist of the Year” is the perfect place to write in a vote for our very own Monstermatt Patterson. In addition to his work on the podcast and the various articles he has contributed to our humble little blog, Monstermatt has also built up quite the portfolio of amazing artwork. You can see examples of his amazing work at both his official website and at Ha-Ha! Horror.

To reiterate:

Category 19. Best Blog – Gravedigger’s Local 16
Category 24. Best Horror Multimedia (Audio or Videocast) – Six Foot Plus
Category 31: Linda Miller Fan Artist of the Year – Monstermatt Patterson

If you’re looking for more voting suggestions, please check out the following:

For Your Consideration…Dr. Gangrene for the 2013 Rondo Awards
For Your Consideration…Tom “Jackson Phibes” Bagley for the 2013 Monster Kid Hall of Fame

You can find the ballot (and voting instructions) at the official Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards website.

The Undead of Mars

It has been close to five years since Veronica Mars went off the air, and this show was set to remain dead until a few days ago, where a Kickstarter Project raised over two million for a movie. Currently, over 50,000 people have raised over three million for this movie.

All right.  At first, I was apathetic about the whole thing. Never watched the show and the fans hadn’t reached the Joss Whedon-levels of obnoxiousness so it didn’t really bother me that some five-year dead property had been resurrected for the sake of a movie.

Until, I thought about how much three million dollars could buy. Questions about responsibility started to pop up – if a group of people the size of the population of Pensacola, Florida can raise three million dollars for something superflous a movie for a dead CW/WB property, couldn’t they do something similar for a worthwhile cause, like clean water or disease vaccinations?

I don’t really care about Veronica Mars or its fans. Congrats – about a fifth of what an episode pulled in, rating wise, came together to fund a movie.

So here’s a proposition for me and I hope that everyone of the 50k+ (and growing) donors follow.

I’m going to total up the money I’ve spent on music from the start of 2013 until the end of the year. Barring any kind of financial emergency that strikes my shoestring budget (and skin-of-my-teeth living) I’ll match as much as I spend on music to a charity dedicated to improving the living conditions of someone in another country. I don’t know what it’ll be (suggestions can be left in the comments or @StrangeJason on twitter).  I’ll add the 25 dollars I donated to DieMonsterDie’s campaign last year, as well as the BottleNose Koffins kickstarter. By the end of the year, if I don’t match what I’ve spent on myself, then fuck me. I’m a piece of shit.

Because that’s how I sort of feel about this endeavour and any future endeavour that funds ressurection art. This is the art that tries to bring dead properties back to life. This isn’t reincarnation, which somehow changes the form of the art. Ressurrection Business is the type of people who haven’t gotten over the truth that sometimes the things you love end and that’s how it goes. Things end. You accept it and get over it. If you don’t, you’re not a grown up.

I don’t really apply this to the scoundrels at major motion film studios because those pigfuckers are in the business of making money by selling movies with brand logos of comic book superhero and cartoon characters to the general public. Anyone going to see a G.I. Joe movie expecting art is a person panning for gold up a creek of shit. They have themselves to blame.

But this funding was a clear labor of love, albeit somewhat misguided in my opinion. These people clearly love this Veronica Mars show and its characters, its writing and its actors. I can’t fault that. But if you’re going to donate to bring a dead thing back to life, you could do the same to keep a living person from dying (or, at least, making their lives not as fucked.)

So I’m going to put my money where my mouth is. First update will be in June.

6′+ Episode 40 is up!

To quote the description given at the new listing:

“A Halloween show! One of many this year. This show was late but after you listen to it, you’ll see why. I have some unexpected technical difficulties. Thankfully, we also have music by The Mission Creeps, Hellfire Revival, Terravoltz and more. Plus, Dr. Gangrene speaks with JACKSON PHIBES of Forbidden Dimension and Monstermatt Patterson ding-dong-ditches us with THE MONSTERMATT MINUTE.”

Remember to email 6′+ (contact at 6ftplus.com) or leave a comment below about the show, whether you liked it or not. Tell your friends, leave a review on iTunes, but above all – enjoy.

Out of September and into October

September has been a quiet month. Both W.Jon and I have been busy outside of the website, as well as preparing for 2012′s Halloween season. 6ftplus is busy. We’re going to have some decent content for you once October 1st rolls around.

The site’s due for an update. We use WordPress here at GdL16 and probably will stick with it. Tumblr is more for sharing artwork. If I can find a decent theme to mess around with and incorporate the best of both, that should work fine. I need to resync this site with gravediggerslocal.tumblr.com. There have been problems for the last month or so.

The layout isn’t so bad but the background’s going away. It’s time. This will all happen after the Holiday season, when we’re all so sick of it.

Until then, get excited.

6′+ Episode 39 is up!

To quote the description given at the new listing:

“If you were promised a future with cities in space, cars that flew through the sky and everything covered in chrome, then today’s modern age seems lackluster. We remember a time when the future was much more bizarre and weird. We’ve got music from Fortyone, Groovie Ghoulies, Dead United, The Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and the Amino Acids. Plus, Monstermatt Patterson travels far beyond Venus in his Monstermatt Minute. We also have a very special edition of 3FeetDeep with the mad mademoiselle of music, Ms. Veronique Chevalier.

Note: I forgot to say this in the episode – Veronique Chevalier will be at Octopodicon in Oklahoma City October 5th- 7th, Seattle SteamCon Oct. 26th- 28th & TeslaCon in Madison, Wisconsic Nov. 30th- Dec. 2nd.”

Remember to email 6′+ (contact at 6ftplus.com) or leave a comment below about the show, whether you liked it or not. Tell your friends, leave a review on iTunes, but above all – enjoy.

You can find all episodes of 6′+ over at the official site as well as on iTunes and Stitcher . We’re also on Facebookand Twitter.

6′+ Episode 38 is up!

To quote the description given at the new listing:

“9/8 marks the 4th birthday of Gdl16. If numbers aren’t your thing, we’ve got music for you. Monstermatt Patterson helps blow out the candles and Dr. Gangrene enlists BILL MOSLEY, SID HAIG, and KEN FOREE as party entertainment on the Metal Morgue. We’ve got music by The Evil Streaks, King Ghidora, Godless Wicked Creeps, Coffin Fly and more! Happy Birthday, GdL16!”

Remember to email 6′+ (contact at 6ftplus.com) or leave a comment below about the show, whether you liked it or not. Tell your friends, leave a review on iTunes, but above all – enjoy.

R.I.P. X-Entertainment.com (2000-2012)

In the first time in close to a year, I visited X-Entertainment today to read the sad news that the site has been dead for months now. This is a sad (albeit late) moment.

Both Weird Jon and I have been long-time fans of the site X-Entertainment.com (referred to as X-E from here on).  It might be said that its Halloween Countdown was the inspiration for our own, and that it’s poignant commentary and humor that celebrated all things that we value here at GdL16 might have been a big influence on us years before we even bothered to sign up for a blogger account.

It was the recent sign-up for the 2012 Halloween Countdown that brought me back to see the recent posts by Matt about how X-E has been retired. He started last year’s countdown in September and I wanted to see if he was doing the same. Alas, the poor boy decided to put the site into the garage for good. After being associated with Ugo.com, going out on its own and providing over a decade’s worth of humor, Matt (founder and writer of X-E) has decided to rebrand himself with the new website, DinosaurDracula.com. He seems to be updating more frequently.

X-E isn’t going down. It’ll still be up so the articles and archives will remain available. Plus, why have someone squat on the domain and take a lucrative brand that Matt has spent so much time building up? But for new content, head over to DinosaurDracula.com.
