More Tricks and Treats

Since I had so much fun putting together my first “Tricks and Treats” article last year, I thought I’d give it another go:

Thanks to Hulu, you can watch horror movies like The Blair Witch Project or Raiders of the Living Dead online for free!

In addition to his show being syndicated nationwide on Me-TV, Svengoolie (one of the local’s favorite horror hosts) will be hosting a monster movie marathon on This TV this Halloween!

The Canadian haunted attraction Nightmares Fear Factory has both Flikr and Facebook albums devoted to hilarious pictures of people who have been scared in said attraction

Have you ever read August Derleth’s “posthumous collaborations” with H.P. Lovecraft and wondered just how much of the story was actually by Lovecraft? Well, wonder no more, as you can read H.P. Lovecraft’s commonplace book (which Derleth used for the collaborations) here.

Google Books offers complete uploads of old LIFE magazine issues, which I used to find this old article about Halloween. And thanks to the full views of Billboard magazine, I was able to find two amazing issues from the 80′s dealing with video stores’ Halloween promotions (along with tons of vintage ads for now-defunct VHS companies’ horror output).

I don’t know about you, but I was shocked when I found out that >There’s Nothing Out There and Liquid Sky had official websites. Similarly, the co-writer of Meet the Hollowheads has put up the production diary for the film online.

For those of you not satisfied with last year’s selection of free pumpkin carving stencils, here are some Squidbillies stencils you can carvify.

If you’re going out as a Ghostbuster this year, you might find these plans for making a slime blower replica handy.

My Coke Rewards has a free discount coupon for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios while Newbury Comics has a “20% off all Halloween items” coupon.

If you request a free catalog from Skirmish paintball, you’ll receive a free DVD featuring a brief (but hysterical) segment about a Dracula-themed paintball battle.

Here’s a funny list of 30 ways to confuse Trick or Treaters. That said, this should along be regarded as an amusing read rather than a how-to guide. Be a good sport and give out goodies. If you want to confuse them, I’ve found that wearing a costume while answering the door tends to help.

If you really want to trick them, why not try one or more of these spooky ideas from Ed Morrow’s The Halloween Handbook.

Finally, Chris Kullstroem’s Making a Monstrous Halloween has tons of spooky prop ideas while Country Living Happy Halloween! offers up several spooky ideas for Halloween decor and haunted house scenes.

It’s News to Me!

While browsing through Comcast’s OnDemand service, I discovered that the “Preferred Collection” menu (found in both the “Free Movies” and “Premium Channels” sections) contains free movies that aren’t listed in any of the other movie categories. If you want to see films like Curse of the Demon and Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, I highly recommend it!

Thanks to laughingsquid on Twitter, I found out that somebody made a fire-breathing Godzilla snow sculpture.

In other Godzilla news, IDW Publishing has worked out a deal with Toho to publish a comic book called Godzilla: Monster World. The comic, which will be released next month, will also feature appearances by other monsters from the Godzilla franchise! Licensing issues prevented that from happening in the Marvel and Dark Horse Godzilla comic book series, although this will not be the first time an original American comic book will feature other Toho monsters. That honor goes to Trendmasters’ one-shot comic book, although it would have happened sooner if Atlas Comics’ proposed Godzilla series had ever been realized. Hardcore fans will note that the promotional Godzilla vs. Megalon comic doesn’t count since it was a loose film adaptation rather than an all-new adventure.

Your dreams have come true…there is an Alien Pez dispenser.

The Warner Archive has released an official DVD-R of the rare Rankin-Bass/Tsuburaya Productions giant turtle movie, The Bermuda Depths. It’s right up there with Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and Legends of the Super Heroes in terms of highly sought after video rarities released by the Archive.

Someone is actually making a sequel to The Killer Shrews. I hope they either call it “Shrew Fast Shrew Furious” or The Killer Shrews: The Squeakquel.

The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society, best known to readers of this site as the makers of The Shadow Over Innsmouth audio drama and the “Scary Solstice” CD series, have announced that their film adaptation of “Whisperer in the Darkness” will premiere at this year’s H.P. Lovecraft film festival. Those booking a room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel to attend the festival should use the code “HPL” before checkout in order to get a nifty discount. For more information, please visit its official Facebook group and/or the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society Facebook group. Oddly enough, that last group posted a picture of a fungi-infected spider that nicely illustrates the sort of head structure Lovecraft intended for the Mi-Go of the story the film is based on.

Also on the Lovecraft front, Bang! Productions Ltd. and Colin Edwards have completed an audio movie version of Lovecraft story “The Dunwich Horror.” Although the concept of audio movies predates this adaptation, it does seem to be the first drama-style audio movie that is in 5.1 sound and plays in theaters (as opposed to “direct to CD/MP3″ release). For more information, please visit the official website.

Finally, I’d like to announce that we have some updates coming to the site this year. Gravedigger’s Local 16 is in the process of being redesigned and moved to a new server. We’re also in the process of adding images to older articles. Although we originally only intended to add cover scans to old reviews, we’ve also been toying with the idea of putting pictures in other articles. Please let us know what you think of this, or anything else you would like to see here, by contacting the Front Office. While you’re writing, please feel free to discuss your favorite podcasts, as we’re in the process of creating an official Gravedigger’s Local 16 podcast with music, stories and more! More will be posted about this as it develops…

Tricks and Treats

A Halloween How-To: Costumes, Parties, Decorations, and Destinations by Lesley Pratt Bannatyne has tons of easy tricks to pull during your next Halloween party or haunted house, with my favorites being the dropping spider and half man gags.

Here’s something to do when you’re bored while on Twitter: Tweet the phrase “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and wait for the fun to begin.

Remember the “giallo movie generator” from last year’s countdown? Well, here’s something similar devoted to Clive Barker’s love scenes. Is it NSFW? You’d better believe it!

Gravedigger’s Local 16 favorite Barrett’s Haunted Mansion put up a cool offer on their Facebook page: They’re giving free admission to the haunt (but not the “Buried Alive” attraction) to any customer who was born in October!

I highly recommend looking up haunted attractions in your area and then checking their Facebook/Twitter/etc. pages for discount coupons. I’ve found ones for the Factory of Terror in Fall River, MA and the Century Haunted Hayride in Auburn, MA so far and I bet you can find even more.

Have a bunch of walnuts and aren’t feeling hungry? Then make some hobgoblins using the notes from this 1943 issue of Popular Science.

Dryer lint. A worthless byproduct or an awesome free source of fake moss for Halloween displays? Read the Amazon preview for How To Haunt Your House by Shawn and Lynne Mitchell to decide for yourself.

Speaking of Amazon previews, the one for Halloween Crafts: Eerily Elegant Decor by Kasey Rogers and Mark Wood has creepy clip art and instructions on how to make things like fake candles.

Finally, the Google books preview for The Halloween Activity Book: Creepy, Crawly, Hairy, Scary Things to Do by Mymi Doinet and Benjamin Chaud shows you how to make monster mirrors and ghoulish garlands.

Don’t discount these deals!

GdL favorite Barrett’s Haunted Mansion is once again offering a discount admission coupon on their official website. However, some restrictions apply (see coupon for details).

Visit Borders is the official coupon site of Borders Booksellers. The coupons change regularly, so don’t fret if the coupon you see today doesn’t suit your needs. I was at Borders a few weeks ago and they had some markdowns on many horror DVDs, including Phantasm for $8.99. Slap a coupon on top of that and you’ve got an even better deal!

Speaking of Halloween sales, Amazon has an entire section of their website devoted to their various Halloween promotions.

For any New Englanders reading this, I highly recommend subscribing to the various Newbury Comics online newsletters if you haven’t done so already. Not only will you get a lot of cool news and contests, but they often throw in some handy coupons. Of particular interest is the “20% off any Halloween item” they sent out this week. Well, 20% of any Halloween item that isn’t on sale and isn’t a CD or DVD. See coupon for further details.

Finally, Union Fellow Halloween Forum has an entire folder devoted to various sales, discounts and coupons. Check it out!

Halloween Horror Nights Discount

If you’re a member of Coca-Cola’s rewards program (or are willing to sign up) and are planning on going to Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights in California, click this link. If that doesn’t work, go to http://www.mycokerewards.com and type “halloween” into the search bar. When you get the search results, click on the one that costs 0 points called “Save up to $20 to Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights” and follow the instructions to get your discount.

Sadly, this offer doesn’t seem to apply with the Universal Studios location in Orlando, which also offers Halloween Horror Nights. Offer expires November 1, 2008.
